Houston- Just weeks before the official start of the 2021-2022 school year, HISD, the largest school district in the state, has close to 600 certified teacher positions left unfilled.
On Saturday, the district held a job fair at Delmar Fieldhouse for prospective candidates.
“We’ve been actively recruiting throughout the summer but yes, so we still have plenty of vacancies available,” senior manager Dr. Alejandro Gonzalez said.
There were about 150 campuses that registered to attend the fair to interview candidates to fill a variety of key teacher roles.
“Critical shortage areas have been identified are special education teachers that has core content certification, our bi-lingual teachers and secondary science and math teachers,” Dr. Gonzalez said.
The district has streamlined the qualification process.
“If you have a college degree, you submit your transcripts based on the courses you’ve taken they will let you know what you qualify for to teach,” Dr. Gonzalez said.
